Comments:

I wasn't able to get on until Saturday night this time around. When I did get on
I was expecting some strong runs like the usual start of the contest, but that
did not happen. I think that probably confirms what I've always thought - a lot
of guys get on at the beginning of the contest and don't stay on. With limited
operating time on Saturday, my totals when I went to sleep were about 200 Q's
below usual. They stayed that way until the end. Part of it of course is also
missing rovers at their first couple of stops by getting on late, Q's that
can't be made up.

Condx here were below normal except for the some limited enhancement. The cold
front that came through the eastern part of the country really killed the
condx, expecially on 903 and above. And with the Hepburn map predicting
"black" condx for most of the country, not much was expected. The
APRS map seemed to confirm this as it was colorless for most of the contest
period.

But of course, as we continue to learn, you can't always count on the
predictions or even the live information. I worked AA4ZZ/EM96 Saturday night on
2M which is just beyond my normal range. Nothing else unusual was worked and
closer in stations were weaker than normal. Sunday morning K8GP told me they
were working into AR, MO and AL on 2M. Still nothing unusual at my QTH. Sunday
evening around 6 pm local time AA4ZZ called me again on 2M and asked to try 222
and 432. We did and worked right away. Around 8 pm W4NH in EM85 called in with
loud sigs on 2M and we quickly worked on 222 and 432. Many calls to the SW
yielded no additional long haul QSO's so it seemed likley the tropo duct was
basically to the higher/mountaintop stations. In the last hour of the contest
however, K4RWP in TN/EM86 called, followed a little while later by W4ZRZ in
EM63/AL (900 miles or so). Toward the end K4LY in EM85/SC called in as well and
though we didn't make it on 222, he had a good signal on 2. That was it for me
for the tropo - one station in AL, SC, TN, NC and GA. I'm wondering if it was
because there was not much activity on toward the end of the contest in the SE
or was it these stations were just in the right place? I'm also wondering what
caused the tropo and why it didn't show up on the APRS map at all. Perhaps the
hurricane in the gulf?

Overall, activity was not all that great here in the Northeast. What saved the
day were the rovers. While very cool, the weather was very good for much of the
area, perhaps encouraging more stations to head out. Anyway, tnx to all of you
for your efforts!

I will be writing up the contest result articles in QST. I know there were some
great long haul contacts made during the contest. If you want to share some of
that or have something interesting that you experienced please pass it along.

Tnx for the QSO's!

Jeff K1TEO
