Several weeks ago I discovered lightning damage along with some unexplained
issues to my 20m system. I spent a couple of weekends after the CQWW Phone
contest making the repairs, while the weather was still warm. I would like to
thank wife, Leslie for spending many hours assisting me in removing and
reinstalling the lower 20m beam which weighs 200 pounds. This antenna was
completely dead so I changed the coax and balun. Just when I thought everything
was repaired and working perfectly the B radio position on my Array Solutions
SixPak quit. Luckily I had an extra one from my P40A station that I swapped in
just several hours before the contest began. I started CQing on 15m and had
zero responses so I quickly switched to 20m. For reasons I do not understand, I
am unable to work a lot of stations on 15m in Sweepstakes. Signals are loud on
my three stack of monobanders, but I get few callers. Stations out west seem
to have an endless supply of eastern callers on this band and also on 10m, I
guess I am just in the wrong location. The majority of my QSOs and 82% of my
multipliers were made on 20m which is very unusual. My lowest 20m antenna is 75
feet high and the system is not designed for domestic contests. 40m also
produced a large number of contacts. This was probably the best band from this
location however it was difficult for me to maintain a quiet frequency on the
very crowded band running less than 150 watts. 80m sounded good here, but the
rates were much worse than in previous years. As always there was a lot of
activity in this contest and it is always a thrill to work all of the sections
for the sweep. Thanks for the QSOs. Please QSL via WD9DZV
