Comments:
QRN is steady S9+ on 160, S8 on 80, S7 on 40, and S4-5 on 20-15-10 (and S2-3 on
6M), peaking at about 70 deg which is enough to really hurt EU. The
embarrassing thing is that the exact same noise (and I don't think it's from
power lines) has been present for far too long, extending back at least to last
year's CQ WW CW. Sure would have liked to be able to fully hear and operate
HP,
but it was not to be this year. I am getting some professional help soon, so
hoping to finally nail down the source and get working on a solution.
Unlike the 2005 QRP effort, which was forced by even heavier line noise, I
could be fairly productive with QRP this time. I typically tuned right past
big pile-ups. The goal was to find stations with *no* other callers. Even one
other caller and I was generally out of luck. Garden variety stations were
often untouchable because of the light, but steady stream of callers. Was neat
to bag JT5DX and HS0ZAR at just the right moment (S9+, no other callers,
"K1?" and eking out the rest of the call). Calling slightly
off freq
helped for some whose filters allowed for it, but many ops these days only
listen in a narrow passband. It was an emotional rollercoaster, with the
thrill of a neat one being eclipsed by constantly getting beaten out by ops
with next to no station. Enjoyed using that big knob in the middle of the rig
a lot - that is becoming a lost art, especially on CW.
Also was often thinking about how a "multiplier" isn't much
of one
until you have something to multiply it by. With this ratio of Q to M of less
than 3, it hardly made sense to sit there in some of the pileups that I did.
But once you work a good one, you start thinking you can work everything.
Even worked a few EU on 160, the only ones I could hear (the Beverage hears the
same crud that the tx ants do). But left a lot of stuff behind, some of which
would've been tough even with HP. Had some runs (more like casual strolls) up
high on 10 and 15. Felt like a human pinball on 10 as the other US stations
were very weak and perpetually took over the freq without even knowing I was
there.
Thanks to all who took the time to dig my callsign out for the QRP QSO and
thanks to everyone who made the effort to travel to activate from a QTH that
would not otherwise be QRV. CQ WW CW is my favorite weekend of every year.
Happy Thanksgiving.
