Comments:

Rig: FT-2000, Tokyo Hy-Power HL-1.2Kfx amp at max 700W out (300W on 15m due to
high SWR); Ants: Spiderbeam at 30ft high; Butternut HF2V with elevated radials
for 40 and 80m.

I had originally planned a LP entry due to lots of HP competition in this
region, but the first 2.5 hours at 100W were so slow I succumbed to temptation
and switched on the amp, so this is a HP entry after all. Conditions seemed to
improve later, so maybe I should have persevered with the 100W?

Good fun to chase the WRTC 1x1 stations and excellent operating from all the
teams even if the band QSY requests were occasionally a little
"aggressive" from some teams :-)

It was disappointing that very many US stations did not know their ITU zone or
very confidently gave out the wrong zone (e.g. a KF5 said "you're 59 Zone
6 in Texas"). Many just gave their state, or a serial number, their CQ
zone, or even grid square - anything but ITU zone, it seemed. It also seemed
no-one in Wisconsin, in particular, knew whether they were in zone 7 or 8 and
short of starting a long conversation ("are you east or west of the 90
degree line of longitude?") I logged all Wisconsin stations who didn't
know as zone 8. Will I be penalised if it transpires they were in fact in zone
7? By contrast almost every European station knew their ITU zone.

Another observation: the FCC phone band allocations are frequently ignored; I
lost count of the number of US stations who called me when I was running Europe
around 14140.

It was good fun: it's been some years since I have done a 24-hour non-stop
operating stint! See you next year.

73,
Steve, PJ4DX
