Comments:
Hello Fellow SS Lovers,
This year's SS Phone contest was a chance to compete against myself. NX4N vs.
NX4N@W4DUG; what a great time I had!
Contender #1 = NX4N @ Home QTH
SO1R: K3/KPA500
Antennas: 40m quarterwave vertical for 40m/15m; 20m/10m attic dipole.
Contender#2 - NX4N @ W4DUG (Tampa ARC clubhouse)
SO1R: IC-7600/Alpha 76A (two tube)
Antennas: 2EL 40m 110'; C31XR @ 100'; C19XR @ 70'
Each 'competitor' operated 3.1 hours (NX4N operated one extra minute more than
NX4N @ W4DUG).
- NX4N at home had the advantage of better operating times (first hour of the
contest and Sunday afternoon 'fresh meat)
- NX4N @ W4DUG operated early Sunday morning with changing bands and sleepy
ops, but had much better antennas and 2X power.
Both efforts were all CQing - no S&P.
Now the interesting part -
Please see the details below and note how close the scores, qso's, mults and
even the rates were. Perhaps this suggests that indeed the biggest single
enabling and limiting factor in contests is the operator!
Either way these two operating gigs were a blast! Many thanks to the Tampa ARC
for again letting me use their wonderful clubhouse and antennas farm.
It was really fun to give out several sweeps with both the NX4N and W4DUG
callsigns; I truly enjoyed hearing someone say 'SWEEP!' so much WCF must have
been harder to find this year.
I haven't operated a phone contest seriously for nearly 20 years. However such
a self-competition format motivated this cw op to give phone contesting a bit
more serious effort, and I noticed great improvement in my operating ability by
the end of it. Of course, when you're so rusty there is no way to go but up!
:-)
I also was pleased to hear so many new checks and tried to slow down a bit when
those newbies needed a fill.
Hope you enjoyed SS Phone as much as I did, even part time!
vy 73,
Chris, NX4N
