For a change, ye humble QST Phone SS editor made the plunge, and put in a
serious effort. Doing the writeup every year gives you an interesting
perspective. The A-power guys always have a tight competition, and a fun time.
They also have some really slow hours on Saturday night, which, surely, I can
improve upon. Having never done A-power before, I thought, why not ?
Before the contest, I hoped for several things:
- Good 10 meter conditions.
- 20 meters open until at least 0300Z.
- A good run on 40 meters.
- A New Mexico A-power record.
Well, 3 out of 4 isn't bad. 40 meters was awful. I figured with a big 40 meter
beam, I would be able to run on 40. Ha ! Not only couldn't I run, I couldn't
S&P effectively. Went out several times with the flashlight to make sure
the beam was still pointed ENE. With 31 and 37 QSO hours at 04Z and 05Z, it was
a very humbling experience. Strangely, I did better running on 80.
With that miserable experience, I followed the lead of perennial B-power
winners like W7WA and took all 6 hours of off-time at once to maximize my time
on the (productive) high bands: 07Z-13Z. I jumped right over 15 meters and
parked on 28435 at 1503Z, staying there until 2239Z. 10 was excellent, with
steady propagation to W1,2,3,4,8,9,northern 0,northwest 7, all of VE. Worked
the 2nd radio very hard for S&P QSO's on 15 and 20 meters, keeping the rate
during those hours in the 60's and 70's.
Except for a few hours on Saturday night, it was great fun !
Thanks for all the QSO's.
73,
Steve, N2IC
