Had a weekend pass from the XYL so this was my first amateur radio activity
since last November's CQWW; the fun (and condx) seemed to carry on where I left
off.
I decided on a 40m single band entry, as the enforced rest periods are fairly
obvious in this category and the seasonal summertime dip in the MUF wouldn't
really affect 40m. The only real handicap is the short window of common
darkness with DX areas, South America being the exception to this.
I operated from my OM's bungalow in Lichfield and Bill (G4EHT) put an
inverted-Vee dipole up for me a couple of weeks before the contest. The apex
was at 30 feet with the ends around 10 feet up in a small suburban garden. Far
from spectacular but I figured on 40m I would not likely be competing with
beams or 4-Squares in the low power section. Besides, I've had good results in
the past with simple low wires.
Contest preparation was not ideal. Despite working a week of night shifts right
up to the contest, my body clock had not adjusted (it never does) and just 3 or
4 hours into the contest I was fatigued due to lack of sleep throughout the
previous week. Fortunately though I'd got off to such a flyer in the first two
hours that I really only had to maintain my hourly targets for the remainder of
the 34 hours to achieve my goal which was 1100 QSO's.
Search & pounce was the order of the day, with the occasional short 10
minute long runs, as I couldn't hold a frequency for any length.
DX was scarce as expected due to the shortness of the night. I think the
highlight was being called by a HS on one of my brief runs.
There was one visit from Murphy, which is unusual for me and not typical of
Win-Test either. On the fly I decided to edit a received serial which I'd
miscopied but somehow I must have mucked up my own serials. So for the next 7
or 8 QSO's I was issuing serials totally out of sequence, lesson learned there!
Of course the log will reflect what I actually sent, and not what I 'should'
have sent.
The contest audio was recorded with the freely available Audacity software.
This is something I have done for several years now. I record at 8 kbits, which
is more than sufficient for Morse, or SSB, for that matter.
As always www.cqcontest.net kept me on my mettle, it really is a great
website.
Thanks to my wife for letting me play radio and my parents for the use of their
QTH. I hope to return for CQWW CW in some capacity.
