Comments:

The Sweepstakes is the first contest I ever entered, as an original style Novice
back in 1958. Call me KN9LIO. A high school friend, Gene Haberstich, K9IAP
(SK), had entered the year before and told me QST published his call in the
results. Wow!

Well, I was in. I got on and blazed away with my DX-40, NC-98, J-38 straight
key, a couple of crystals and my Windom antenna. Sure enough, there I was in
the May 1959 QST. I just now looked it up: 53 QSOs, 28 sections in 20 hours
for a score of 3605. 2.65/hour.

What I wish I had was an audio recording of my operation, which would be an
absolute hoot. I was a pretty shaky Novice and I can just see myself hunched
over my desk, laboring away for 20 hours to get all those 53 Qs.

Later I got seduced by DX contests and never really went back to the SS. This
is the first log I've submitted for decades. It's good code practice, however,
and that's how I approached it this year, as well as harkening back to my first
effort so long ago. I squeezed in some operating time between the fall house
and yard activites that took priority. I kept it all on 40m as that was likely
how I did it back in 1958, as well as unassisted, low power. I did have more
sophisticated gear this time as well as computer logging and somewhat better
results, although no more remarkable than my original effort. But I'll get to
see my call in the result listings. Wow!

Still having fun after all these years.

73,
Ken, AB1J
