Comments:
Operating from a temporary installation while rebuilding the shack. Should have
been hammering 2x4s but couldn't resist the urge to set up at least one radio
and see what I could do from a different setup. Last voyage with the old office
desk I've been using since 2002, before retiring it.
A new el cheapo RTL-SDR USB panadaptor for the FT-2000 was wonderful -- it
arrived Friday afternoon, and after a 15-minute install to tap the 1st IF I had
point-and-click search and pounce and a whole new sense of the bands. It
provides a swath of up to 3.2Mhz wide at a glance and was terrific to check 15M
and 10M with a quick bounce up to see if anyone was anywhere on those bands. The
SDR filtering is like having a second razor-sharp receiver and helped a lot when
big guns slid in closer than the FT-2000's mechanical and DSP filters liked.
Will take some time to explore new strategies to use the better info and
sharper tools. Have a similar SDR unit on the way for the venerable FT-920 and
I already know it will make that great older radio better than new. For about
$14 including shipping, you just can't get more for your ham radio buck.
Conditions were bleak, and very few EU mults or Qs worked with 100W. Did far
better in my last low-power outing 10 years ago with 2-el inverted-V beams on
40M and 80M (vs today's rotary dipole on 40M and an east-firing 80M vertical
array -- the array controller is in storage until the shack is ready to set up
again later this week).
Back to hammering. If there's any time left in my week of vacation, I'll fix
the 160M inverted-L, and hang a pair of OCF multi-band dipoles fabricated
during the winter to provide instant-switchable coverage of the horizon for the
second radio on 40M through 10M. Contest season will be here again soon.
Thanks for the Qs.
