Comments:
Thanks to John Evans, N3HBX, for letting me use his great contest station again!
The receive 4-square array worked very well Friday night on 80 meters.
This contest was definitely two different days. Friday night was great on 80
and 40.
Saturday night was far from great on 80 and 40. Late Saturday, I saw a large
thunderstorm off to the northwest - the good news is that it missed the station
- the bad news is it headed off towards Europe. Lots of noise Saturday - 40 was
a slog and 80 almost useless.
I had only two or three QSOs Saturday on 10 meters. Early Sunday, though, ten
opened to Europe. I had the highest last ten rate of the contest running on 10
meters for half an hour or so and worked a lot of multipliers. 10 stayed open
to Europe for hours.
15 was a disappointment - I never really got any good runs going for long. In
2014 (my last WAE CW), I had a 111 hour and over 700 QSOs on 15. Not this year
- no hours over 100.
I followed my usual strategy of concentrating on multipliers, using the RBN to
identify new multipliers quickly and choosing bands to run on based on
multiplier productivity more than rate in some cases.
The RBN is definitely a game changer - any time a new station started CQing on
Sunday, there was an immediate pileup of the usual suspects. Over 1/3 of my
total QSOs were S&P - all found as a result of the RBN and spotting
network.
