"Well, wasn't that special"
Results overall were slightly better than last year - 350 more QSOs, just under
4800 total. But we had more problems with inter-station interference running CW
and SSB on the same band (15 and 40). That is because all antennas are within
a 400' circle. We had to run at reduced power on those band-modes. Thanks to
W6OTC, for the loan of his 4O3A high power filters.
We lost some prime time on the 80 SSB station due to a networking problem which
was eventually cured by our IT guys, N6WM and N6WM. After that N1MM+ was solid.
The bands:
160m: Ugh, poor propagation and power line noise made for a frustrating night
for N6RO.
80m: K6AW and N6NU extracted all that the band could produce, despite our
network issue on SSB.
40m: Using a sloper and 500w, WA6O exceeded last year's CW total. On SSB, we
had a dynamite team of KI6NJW and WX5S. Dominique, NJW, is K3EST's daughter,
and she did a great job in her first contest. (A chip off the old block!)
20m: New station records on both modes with K3EST doing SSB with 5/5/5 yagi
stack and 1400 watts; K6AW on CW, using a C3 and KPA500.
15m: N6BV operated CW from home in SF, remoting in on the K3 system and a TH-6;
N6WM handled SSB on site with 6/6/6 stack. Thanks to Chris for coordinating
with Dean and resolving several software issues with the network.
10m: Better than expected: WA6O logged about 180 Qs on Saturday afternoon in
a three hour opening. N6RO slogged away Sunday and was rewarded in a last 15
minute run of 18 stations on SSB!
We nearly had to shut down about 2 hours before the end, when a serious T-storm
passed by, missing us by 2 miles.
So, thanks for the Qs, hope you all had the fun we did.....
