Another CQ WW DX contest in the books. Even with the challenging
condtions this contest was mostly fun. There were moments when I was
just not sure why I was still operating. I kept thinking conditions
would get better but it seemed they never really cleared up. I got in
a about two hour nap on friday. I was at the radios about 46.5/47
hours. Other than laying down for about 15 to 30 mins twice during the
contest and taking two quick showers I was at the radios the rest of
the time.
I decided to go assisted again this year - I was still unsure late on
Friday if I would be assisted or unassisted. would do that again this
year. I am torn between wanting to have the help of all my firends
around the world and doing it all myself. I think that the use of the
skimmer servers on CW have gotten folks out of the habbit of spotting
things on SSB. I had to keep reminding myself that the bandmap
produced by spotting on SSB is not the compleate picture that it is on
CW and that I need to tune the band and not just rely on the spotting
network.
It was nice to not have the rain and staic of last year. Too bad that
the absorption was making the signals weak or non-existant on the low
bands. Looking at my 3830 post from last year I can see that the
static really limited my low band numbers the first night. While I did
make up some ground the second night last year - overall I did better
on 160, 80 and 40 this year even with all of the absorption.

I am still amazed at how well I get out on 80 meters with my sloping
dipoles. I keep thinking I sould build a 4 square for that band and
then I do another contest and it makes it hard for me to justify the
time and expense. But I guess I will just need to build one to see
how it compaires to these two sloping dipoles. I guess with the
prospect of the coming years of contests at SFI=70 I should just get
on that project.
I only had a few issues with the station. The rotory 15m yagi switch
postion starting acting up the first night - I switched away from it
and when I switched back it did not swich in. I swapped to another
controller (same on several bands) and it did not fix it, nor did
reseating the connectors at the wall. I was about to go wire around
it ( 200 ft walk) when it swiched back on. It was late enough that I
really only needed this one antenna so I stopped swiching it. On
Saturday morning this switching problem occured again and I could not
get it to come back - so I did walk out to the tower and move that
antenna to an unused switch position and that fixed the issue for the
rest of the contest. And proving once again that having the swiching
at the ground is the best way to go - sure makes wiring around issues
in the middle of a contest easy. The other swiching issue is one that
I solved before the start. We have been having issues with the 40
meter postion on the two radio switch. I thought it was relays and in
fact I now think this issue has been affecting us for a long time. And
even caused us to think we were having amp TX relay issues. Now I
need to go back and look at that amp issue again. It turned out to be
a cox connection issue with the center pin connection between the two
radio switchbox and the coax connector on the cable. I sure hope that
is the *one* cause of this issue - because it will be great to finally
solve it. There are a few line noise sources that I have been
ignoring (lack of time) for a few years that have been getting worse
and they were more annoying this weekend - likely due to weak signals
and also needing to work stations more sations from directions
(southeast) were the worst noise is from. There have been a few
weekends were we have gotten lucky and it has been very quiet. Time
to get them fixed - get that ball rolling this morning.
I am sorry this is all so long winded but I will confess that I find
it very useful to me to have a record of these contest events in one
place - and these 3830 score postings are very useful to remind me
what happened in past contests.
Thanks for all the contacts and as always great to hear all of my
friends from all over the world in this shared event.
