Comments:
I had a wonderful time this year! My girlfriend, Karen, accompanied me to
Montserrat for her first trip to the Caribbean. Bright and early on our first
full day, we were both up on the roof installing antennas. Karen was a willing
and capable partner, so the TH6 went up quickly. Sadly, the rotator would only
turn the antenna in one direction. Basic troubleshooting strongly suggested
that the problem was at the rotator, so the remainder of Day 1 was spent
installing the spare. Happily, the spare rotator worked fine, and there were
no more gotchas installing the antennas. The only other speed bump was
figuring out how to get my new SPE 1.3K-FA amplifier's built-in antenna tuner
to work. A very helpful you tube video was, well, very helpful, so I was soon
all set up and ready to go with the Montserrat legal limit of 1KW for the first
time in 10 years.
I began the contest with the intention of putting in a full effort, but after
the first couple of hours on 20M Saturday morning I just didn't have the
motivation to slug away for the next 36 hours. So I took breaks - lots of
breaks, and I came back to the radio for about an hour at a time. I found
myself really enjoying the runs, and typically added well over 100 QSOs to the
log each hour that I operated during the day. I moved from band to band with
P40W, VY2ZM, and a few other stations. I continue to get energized whenever I
work an old friend or an exotic country, like Pitcairn Island, and I was
pleased to have a few friends from The Villages call. And it was great fun
having KK6ZM appear in the pileup on 80M.
So, for me it was a very enjoyable weekend.

George K2DM / VP2MDG
