Bob G4BAH was the driving force behind the G0KPW/M6T station from the late
1980s, collecting crankup towers, antennas, rigs and all the paraphernalia
necessary for a multi-multi station. CQWW Phone was always the focus of his
efforts. We started entering M/M in 1991, the station was put together 'field
day style' each year and all the towers cranked to full height a few days
before the contest. We had a change of location in 1997, and in 1999 we set the
European M/M record which stood for 12 years. However, we had to leave the
second site after the contest in 2000 and the equipment was stored in various
locations for several years. In 2006 Bob bought a new QTH and we slowly moved
the gear in. This third, final home for M6T has hosted many single-op,
multi-single and multi-2 entries but we never had the resources to return to
multi-multi.
Very sadly, Bob died in early August this year. I had been talking with him
about returning to M/M with a largely new team of operators, and he was
enthusiastic. So after our very sad loss we determined to go ahead and enter
multi-multi, in his memory. Only three operators from the original team remain
- myself, Andy G4PIQ and Steve G0AEV. With lots of preparation work in the
preceding weeks and months, everything went together well and we were ready for
the start of the contest. As we all know, conditions were the worst for very
many years and we really are too far north when conditions are so disturbed;
while no-one in Europe had it good, we could hear those further south such as
9A and E7, running USA stations that we couldn't hear. LZ9W lamented that only
13% of their QSOs were with North America - our figure was an abysmal 7%
despite beaming that way throughout the 'openings'.
Nevertheless the team worked very well together and had a lot of fun, and we
were proud to operate the contest in memory of Bob. We will be back for CW,
this will be the first CW multi-multi at M6T.
