Comments:

I did nothing special to my station prior to Sweepstakes CW other than
to continue the 100-foot tower project that started last year. The
purpose of the two-year project is to spread the cost. So far, the
tower is complete but lacking rotor, mast, and antennas, although the
chrome-moly mast is already nestled in the bottom. I need a thrust
bearing and tramming hardware.

Since I had 100 feet of tower standing, I had to put up something, so
I hoisted the 40-meter X7 add-on dipole and bolted it to the tower at
about 95 feet. I did this Sunday of CQ WW SSB, so I tuned it for the
phone end of the band. On CW, it has about 2.5:1 SWR, so I did not
transmit on it, using my ground mounted vertical instead. But the
dipole makes an nice second receiving antenna instead of Beverages.

This running of SS CW exactly paced last year's progress, plus or
minus about 20 QSOs. The end result was exactly 2 more QSOs than last
year and another sweep. I thought I SO2R'd better than ever, so I was
hoping everyone else's scores went down. But it turns out that I am
apparently as mediocre as I was before.

All of the rare sections fell into place very early. UT and DE were
the last 2 sections, and DE did not reveal itself until Sunday
afternoon. Of course, I finished the contest with 5 DE QSOs. Except
for NT, I think every section had at least 2 or 3 QSOs.

Funny moment: Me: QRL? Occupant: YeSS SS de ...

The temperature sensor in the Alpha 8410 seems to have become
unreliable, especially on 80 meters. From second to second the sensor
indicates some weird temperature which causes the controller to turn
the horrendous noise generator (blower) to maximum buzz-saw mode.

Equipment: K3/100, P3, Alpha 8410; K3/10, Hardrock 50, ETO 91B (thanks
Jeff!); homebrew keyers and SO2R boxes; 80 meter full sized vertical,
40 meter full sized vertical, 20-10 X7 up 61 feet. Hopefully some new
antennas in the next one of these reports.
