Comments:
Another CQWW is in the books...our team would have included Martin DL4NAC and
Bob WA1Z but they needed to cancel for personal reasons. We missed them but we
managed to hold things together for the weekend. Special thanks to Irina DL8DYL
for making the trip from Germany - she was a stalwart of the operation!
Compared to "normal" propagation, Friday night was really rough. High
geomagnetic activity depressed propagation to Europe except for a little burst
on 80m during EU sunrise. 40m was virtually crippled the first night.
Propagation got a little better as the weekend wore on, but it was never
normal, even for a lower SFI. Recovery from the geomagnetic activity never
seemed complete.
On a brighter note, we got to acquaint ourselves again with the strange paths
that emerge during disturbed conditions. Exercise your rotors - sometimes
signals won't be coming from where you think they should be - especially on 40m
in the morning...and, this time, 20m at all hours! And the two JA's we worked on
15m came from the skew path to the southwest. Heard HS and BY on 80m long path
in the afternoon but couldn't bust the EU wall.
We had no hardware failures during the weekend - everything just worked!
We had a brief visit from Martin G3ZAY who was in the States visiting family
for the Thanksgiving holiday. It was nice to meet him!
Thanks to Matt and Juana for their wonderful hospitality and for a fun weekend
on the radio. Even under the strangest of propagation conditions, CQWW is
always fun! And the camaraderie of a multi-op can't be beat. Even when we don't
have great propagation, we still have a ton of laughs. And, in the end, besides
working some cool DX, that's what we really remember about the weekend.
Congrats to W2FU and K9CT for great efforts "west of the Hudson
River" - this was a rough weekend inside New England, but way, way rougher
outside New England.
