160M upside-down trap "L"
I had my act together for this one. 80M antenna went up the previous weekend
and a brainstorm to deploy a DX-LB Trap dipole as an upside down "L"
fed at
the lower corner was implemented on Wednesday. After encouraging results
Wednesday evening (Eu and Caribbean) I spent more time with it Friday adding
two radials and trimming it to resonate in-band. OK only about 20
raise-measure-drop-trim-repeat cycles were needed to get it to resonate
in-band, but it was easy work.
Started 10 minutes late and quickly realized this one was going to be
a real slog for a low power station. Switching power supplies were out, full
strength in their usual spots. At least no power line noise. That was
reassuring (OK, not).
It was pretty amazing to hear 20M and 40M sound more like 80M after
Eu sunrise and you've worked all the Caribbean and there is nothing left to
work. And for that matter 15M sounding like 10. Dead and deader.
I started a 20M run both days fairly early and they both started off
productive. Then suddenly they just stopped cold. 10-15 minutes
and no responses to CQs. Oh well, back to S&P. No significant rates or
hour
totals to report.
As such the motivation waned. Nodding off while tuning is not productive.
Calling CQ and tuning with the 2nd VFO helped. Reading the entire ON4UN Low
Band DXing chapter on verticals while CQing worked. But, still took lots of
cat
naps. Though N1MM shows Q's in 41 out of 48 hours and off times )60 min show
12 hours total, the real BIC time was more like 28-30 hours.
Fortunately I slept 4 hours Sunday morning as the Lifeline call came with 2
hours left in the contest to report my Mother-in-Law was being transported to
the ER. Pulled the plug and spent the rest of the evening at the hospital. She
fell and broke her hip. Not good for a 92 year old.
CU in the next one,
Ken - WO1N
