Comments:
Congratulations to the K3LR and WE3C teams for their photo finish under very
difficult propagation conditions. The W3LPL team was again blessed with
somewhat more favorable propagation resulting from our location 350 km
southeast of K3LR and 200 km southwest of WE3C. Propagation was far from ideal
with much weaker than normal signals on 160, 80, 40 and 10 meters and generally
poor propagation to most of Asia and especially Japan on every band.
The W5ZN/N4HY passive 8-circle receiving arrays saved the day on 160 and 80
meters making it possible to work many very weak signals on both bands. The
effects of low sunspot activity combined with an unusually large and energetic
solar coronal hole dramatically reduced the number of QSOs possible during the
night on 40 meters, our only decent QSO rate periods (but much lower than
normal) were during the first eight hours of the contest and during the
afternoon and early evening from 1900-0300Z Saturday and 1900-2359Z Sunday.
Our slower than normal 20 and 15 meter daytime QSO rates ended abruptly at
European sunset, much earlier than normal and our openings to Japan were much
less productive than normal on every band. Our small 10 meter QSO total
advantage resulted from relentless CQing to Africa, South America and the South
Pacific, we made not even a single European QSO.
