Disappointing contest. I knew conditions would be bad, but I didn't think they
would be this bad. I was only able to make 22 contacts on Sunday operating all
day.
Based on recent conditions, I didn't think the band would open early, so I
first called CQ at 9AM local time on Saturday morning and immediately started
working Europe. That first hour was my best hour the whole contest by far.
Darn, should have checked the band earlier. Didn't want to make that mistake
again, so on Sunday I was on an hour earlier, but nothing for hours.
That's what makes ten so interesting. I compare it to fishing - you sort of
have an idea what conditions might be like, but you never know, it could be
nothing for hours and then all of a sudden everything. I didn't want to miss
any possible opening and I was trying to make a good score, so I stayed on all
day, both days, calling CQ. Sunday was so bad I ended up multi-tasking, first
playing computer games, and then filling out my CQ DX Marathon log all while
calling CQ, hoping the band would open. HG8W came out of nowhere Sunday
afternoon and about knocked me out of my chair with his 599 + 20 signal. I
thought it would be the start of a Europe opening, but then Nothing.
Oh well, at least I'm heading home in a few days to be with my family during
Christmas. Season's greetings and good DX to all!
