Comments:
The FCG has traditionally mounted a big effort in this event each year, led
originally by Jim, K4OJ (SK 2004) and supported annually with huge efforts by
Ron, WD4AHZ (SK 2016). I thought about these gents a lot this weekend.
No expectations of good propagation this year, so I just went with the flow and
took many more breaks. Poor first night and poor morning, but suddenly broke
open for several hours towards the west before fading away. Good Es in several
long stretches on Saturday evening, but activity was low. Sunday was dreadful
for most of the day before finally coming alive several hours later than on
Saturday and more northerly. 10 Meters is rarely the same band two days in a
row.
My local noise problem to the east and northeast continues, but is less of a
factor when there is so little to work in those directions anyway.
FT-1000MP (SO2V - hundreds worked on 2nd VFO with so much spare time)
Ameritron AL-1500
6-element homebrew at 50' rotatable
4-element homebrew fixed to SA at 34'
Multipliers:
Worked 44 US plus DC, 7 VE, 6 XE, 11 SA, 5 NA, 2 EU and 3 OC. Very pleased to
have VP8NO call in again.
Missed VT AK WY ND NE SD in the US and QC NB NF often worked in VE (rest up for
the next one, Gus, VO1MP!)
Heard 6Y5WJ give someone #001, but never heard Josh again. Also heard three XE
states (TAM, NLE, PUE).
CBS stats output a chart of USA call areas worked. It is based on the digit in
the callsign, so I did a quick calc based on the state to produce the right-hand
column that shows very clearly the exodus from W1-2-3-8-0 to W4-6-7 with W5 and
W9 staying about the same.
Area Callsigns Pct QSOs
--------------------------
0 70 7.6 62
1 34 3.7 23
2 61 6.6 42
3 39 4.2 33
4 99 10.7 127
5 72 7.8 72
6 122 13.2 130 (excluding HI)
7 90 9.7 107
8 112 12.1 103
9 108 11.7 109
--------------------------
Total 807 87.2 808
This is actually a much better distribution than last year, with nice W8/9
totals, but W1/2/3 were still way down.
Interesting to realize that the June VHF Contest actually produced more USA on
6M for me than this weekend did on 10M.
The highlight for me is always to say hello to friends. Thanks to everyone who
made the effort to get on during the busy holiday season.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy, Healthy 2017!
