Comments:
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. For the
2017 ARRL DX CW both N3UM and W3GB operated full time M/2 Assisted
in K3ZO's "Senior Citizen Mode" (meals on a dining table, not the
operating desk, and 6 vs 3 or 4 hrs. sleep each night).
We had at least one radio on for 35 hrs, 2 radios for over 1/3 of
that time. For the first 2 hr 00-02Z N3UM ran on 40 m. while W3GB
clicked and pounced on spots (C&P) on 20. Combined rate was slow,
54-58/hr, and only 69/hr 03-04Z with N3UM still on 40 and W3GB on
80 m. W3GB quit at 0403Z to sleep while N3UM took the low-band late
shift till QRT at 0645Z. He got a few mults on 40 and 160, but 80
was great; 74 Qs in 65 min, 67/hr, all C&P.
On the early shift Sat.
W3GB got 112 Qs and 45 mults C&P on 20 m. 1211-1513Z, then 97 Qs
on 15. Great 15 m. results with SFI only 78 and 71 of the Qs made
using the 40 m. inv-V on its 3rd harmonic. N3UM ran on 20 for 100
Qs in 1.1 hr. starting 1654Z. Rate then slow till dark except for
one good run on 40, 69 Qs in 1 hr. starting 2020Z. After dark OK
rates on 40 and 80, 2 ops. After 04Z W3GB did 80 and 160 on the
late shift till QRT at 0645Z.
Starting 1209Z Sun. N3UM had a good
EU run on 20m., 185 Qs in 2 hr. but only 3 mults. Both of us then
did fairly well C&P on 15 and even 10m. till 20Z. In the last 4
hr. we scraped up 111 Qs, 70 of them on 40 m.
Final results pleased us, mults especially: 96% of DXCC on 2 bands,
70% on 2 others. Got Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Guernsey, Tuvalu, Cocos,
and VK on 40 m. only, plus 4 of 8 ZLs on 40! Mali, Cameroon, UN,
and JA, 20 m. only.
