Comments:
CQWW SSB is beginning to grow on me. This contest generates so many interesting
multipliers that just looking at the announced list of operations before the
event is enough to get me pumped up. The high rates of SSB, and the ease of
multiplier moving, further up the fun factor.
Conditions on 80-15 meters were drastically improved vs the 2016 contest.
Somehow I managed to work 16 fewer multipliers on 160 meters this year as
compared to last year. Probably a combination of less time spent on the band
and fewer available Caribbean multipliers. I still do not understand how so
many Europeans can be nearly S9 and not hear a 4 square calling them.
Seriously Europeans, turn your power down and/or put up some sort of RX
antenna.
80 meters offered some brief runs into Europe. Operating split seemed to
generate more answers to CQ as compared to simplex. I never heard any VK, ZL,
or JA stations on this band.
40 meters started out slow. Europeans were extremely loud but I couldn't run
at all the first night. The band improved significantly the second half of the
contest with a nice European sunrise opening Sunday morning.
Some fun multipliers called in on 20 meters Sunday morning during the European
run. Several VU stations, HS0, and even a zone 23 station in China.
Thankfully both a VK and ZL called long path Sunday afternoon both for double
multipliers.
15 meters seemed to have deeper openings into zone 16 on Sunday and I kept
thinking that some Asia stuff would call in over Europe but that didn't happen.
I missed some easy Caribbean mults on this band.
10 meters had short openings to zone 33 and a few zone 14 stations.
I went 48 hours straight for this one. It was surprisingly easy. The
hallucinations stayed away for most of Sunday. There was one time though when
I jumped out of my chair because I thought someone was standing directly next
to me. It turned out to be an unruly strand of hair hanging down on the side
of my head. That scare gave me enough adrenaline to finish the contest.
