Comments:
Last year was to be the first time for me to operate this contest with high
power but 3 hours in the amp quit on me so this is really my first time. I still
have only one amp so the second radio was only 100 watts.
Power company was out Thursday and fixed a noisy pole on my property. Turned out
it was only a problem on the higher bands - apparently another source is causing
noise on the low bands particularly to the northeast (Europe) - S5 on 160, S4 on
80 and S3 on 40. It really limited my run capability on 40 - very difficult to
copy many stations and there were some calling I had no chance of copying. Felt
like an alligator and spent more time S&P there than would have otherwise. I
had more mults and almost as many Q's on the low bands last year with low power.
That being said the high bands were better than I expected. I probably spent
more time on 15 than I should have but that is where I have the best antennas
and comparing my results with others they performed very well. Propagation to
Europe was much better on 15 Saturday - only a few Europeans on Sunday but it
was a nice surprise to have 5H3EE answer my CQ with a booming signal. On the
other hand 15 was better to JA Sunday though still only a handful of Q's. Ten,
though basically dead much of the weekend, had some decent openings. EA8 and CU
were two unexpected mults.
I'm still learning to adjustment my strategy after running low power for so many
years. SO2R capability is also lacking with only one amp. Had a great time
though - ARRL DX CW and CQ WW CW are by far my favorite contests.
