I don't think people read these so maybe it's a case of a tree falling in the
forest... But anyway:
A few weeks ago there was an extended discussion on the cq-contest reflector
about the CW SS and its future.
Toward the end of the discussion, I contributed a piece concerning CWops and how
it could more effectively nuture new CW operators.
I got three replies, all about a joke I included in the email, nothing at all
about my proposal, which was to implement a 5kHz low speed CW segment at the
high end the CWops Wednesday contest frequencies. This would be an ongoing
weekly part of the contest and would supplement the CWA effort.
So then I sent a condensed version of my email to the top two CWops officers.
No reply at all, not even an acknowledgment of receipt.
I'm not sure what to conclude from this about the CWops organization's interest
in promoting CW among newcomers and those desiring to learn. Hoewever, negative
thoughts are trending.
I thought I'd test my idea by participating on April 4th in the first session in
the 040-045 kHz segments of 20m and 40m. I ran at 24 wpm, which is slow for
seasoned CWops, but fast for beginners, whom I'd expect to be in the 15-20 wpm
range.
Some people slowed down for me, others didn't. Of course, no one knew I was
running a test, so an official experiment might be different, with fast ops
matching a slower speed.
I guess we'll find out what the future holds for CW. Check back in five years.
Ten years might be too late.
