Comments:

Completed another event in the quest to work more grid squares than
anyone, except for perhaps 60 or so people that seem to be on the air
all day every day.

I executed a one-man Field Day the same as I have the 2 previous
years: an exhausting trek across the back yard to the pole-barn.
Along the way I set up the portable full-sized 40 meter vertical with
32 radials. Ths antenna is portable because I can lift the 10 foot
4x4 post and the hole shovel. I also hung an 80-meter open-wire fed
dipole between the highest point on the house and 35 feet of mast
pulled-up against a tree.

Last year I was able to operate 40 meters for the first 9 hours with a
single 2-hour excursion to 20 meters and made about 675 contacts.
This year day-time conditions on 40 were very short and lossy and the
static was high. I had to spend more time on 20 which resulted in
about 120 fewer contacts.

The rest of the event went pretty much the same as always. I took a 4
hour snooze. 80 meters seemed less busy during the late evening and
even more empty Sunday sunrise, even though the static mostly
disappeared. Sunday morning 15 and 10 opened apparently with
sporadic-E propagation to almost everywhere. My last hour had the 2nd
best rate for the whole 24 hour period. The generator ran for more
than 8 hours since I didn't need the fan to keep cool.

The final result was about 110 QSOs less than last year. If a third
of those 1200 contacts confirm via Logbook of the World that they are
all in unique grids, that will close the gap with my Ohio grid chase
competitor! Fat chance.

Equipment: K3, P3, Viking KW matchbox, laptop, monitor, keyboard,
power supply, wireless headphone stuff, Honda eu1000i, and about 1200
"1B OH". The K3 seems sick, it puts out only 80 watts on 20 meters
and only 40 watts on 6.

I might qualify for the 100-point 100% emergency power bonus.
