A massive thanks to my parents for allowing my wife and I to have a week long
holiday at their beach place on the island of Cayman Brac. It was the perfect
combination of radio work, relaxation, and exploration. The Brac (as it is
commonly referred to by locals) has a nice mix of beaches and outdoor
activities. My wife and I enjoyed touring around the island and exploring the
isolated beaches and many caves that the island has to offer.
ZF9CW (aka K5GO) has put two years of work into the ZF9CW station and it really
made setting up and operating a breeze. After several years of playing with
verticals next to salt water, I'm still amazed how a simple quarter wave
vertical can generate such a low angle of radiation and consequently some truly
amazing results. The ROI for a 16' piece of tubing on 20 meters is HUGE.
This was a casual effort. I took off an hour for lunch and slept three hours
early Sunday morning. Nearly every contact was generated from running, which
accounts for the pathetic multiplier total. With one multiplier being worth 19
contacts, a sweep or two through the bands would have paid big dividends.
Station setup consists of two Kenwood 590s rigs, SPE amplifier, and AL-1200
amplifier. A single vertical was used for each band. A flag RX antenna was
used on the low bands and it worked quite well considering its simple design and
setup. N1MM+ worked great, as usual.
My wife was a great help before, during and after the contest. She helped guide
the big 160 vertical into its resting place and even used the blow torch to
solder a few connections.
10 and 15 were a real treat. The majority of the contacts were US but there was
a late afternoon opening to EU on 15 with several HQ and WRTC stations calling
in. As N3BB mentioned, I too had to ask for repeats for nearly every contact
with the WRTC stations. They were weak on every band.
20 had good activity, but DX openings were a disappointment. Just a couple of
hours of "runs" into Europe.
I was surprised to have only one WRTC station to request me to move. Y87C
called on 40 and asked my QRG on 20. Since I was duel CQing, he garnered
himself a mult on 20 within less than a minute. Just a few WRTC stations worked
on 80 meters. Not bad considering their setup and distance from ZF.
Several people on 20 SSB were quick to point out that I do not have a QRZ page
for ZF9DX. I tried to reassure them that everything was legit. QSL via K0DEQ.
Thanks again to K5GO for the use of the station. It was awesome!
Thanks and 73,
Kevin, ZF9DX/N5DX
