Saturday morning my family and I arrived at the summerhouse in Denmark after a
10 hour drive from the Netherlands. Since this is a family holiday (and the fact
that I had already been awake for almost 24 hours), I was not going to seriously
participate in this contest. I did however want to work the WRTC stations so I
did bring my rig with me. The owner of the house, who is also a ham, has a small
crank-up tower on his property. He helped me put up an 3 el tri-bander in that
tower. In addition I strung a dipole for 80 just below the yagi and another
dipole for 40 from a flagpole. Non of the antennas was higher then 9 meter (30
feet) AGL.
Since I recently learned CW, I wanted to focus on that mode and become more
proficient. After being inactive for a couple of months, it took me a little
while to get up to speed again. A second goal was to work all the Y8 stations.
On Saturday I spend just a couple of hours on air since I also wanted to spend
some time with the family. I also wanted to have a good night of sleep because I
had been driving the previous night. Sunday morning I tried my luck on 80 but by
the time I woke up it was already too late. I moved back and forward between 40
and 20. I also listened on 15 and 10 but those bands didn't produce much QSO's.
By the time it was Sunday afternoon I had made a couple of hundred Q's and I
started to feel pretty good about my CW skills. Unfortunately that didn't last
long. The following happened:
Y8: "Y8#* TEST"
Me: "OV2T"
Y8: "OV2T 5NN 28"
Me: "5NN 18"
Y8: "#@%^&&*((&!??>{" (or that's is what I could make
of it)
I was expecting "TU Y8#* TEST" but instead he/she send something
completely different and my brain couldn't figure out what is was. About 20
minutes later this happened again whit another Y8 station. Again I couldn't
figure out what was going on. I decided to do some side band instead and looked
for the Y8 station on 40 meters. The second Y8 I worked on side band tried to
move me to 15 meters. Of course I complied but unfortunately we were not able to
make the Q. But then it hit me. The other Y8 stations had been trying to do the
same on CW and they were sending a QRG to QSY to! Man did I feel silly. I
apologize to those Y8 stations for being such a LID, it sure wasn't
intentionally.
All in All I had lots of fun for the short period of time I was able to get on
air. I only succeeded partially in accomplishing my goals. I did become more
proficient at CW contesting and definitely learned some new things.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to work all Y8 stations. I didn't have a strategy
going into the contest so I was winging it. I lost focus and forgot to regularly
check the other bands for new Y8 stations. In the end I managed to work 60 out
of the 63 WRTC stations.
I had a lot of fun doing this contest and I can only imagine how much fun it
must have been for the WRTC competitors. Thanks to the WRTC organizers who did a
wonderful job hosting and promoting this great event! Also thanks to the ARRL
for sponsoring the IARU HF Championship.
