Ok, this was my first RTTY contest EVER and the first RTTY operation for me
under my own call - I made a few RTTY exchanges under my local club's call
during field day. It took me a while to figure out how to work N1MM+ with the
KX3; transmitting FSK RTTY was no problem but with the KX3 and N1MM+ I wasn't
able to send decoded text to any of the digital windows and I didn't want to use
the KX3's internal decoder all of the time. Finally I downloaded GRITTY and
figured out that it could decod the RTTY coming over the KX3's speaker, and it
was doing a pretty good job of that! I didn't have the time to get the audio
output from the radio wired into the sound card directly so I just let it go.
By the time I got started there were plenty of sigs; thanks all who could hear
me and answered. I almost got W1ZR but I rekin he couldn't hear me well enough
with my 5W and a (temporary) long wire. Surprising (for me, anyway) was the
prop on 15 and 10 meters. And, it was great to hear some of my CWOPS friends,
especially K7SV and VE2FK! I really learned a lot about RTTY during this
contest and I hope to get my station a little more capable for the next one.
A front porch station using a KX3, N1MM+, and a long wire hanging from a tree.
