Comments:
I was not "hungry" enough to put in a big effort knowing that long
skip would force me out of running into S&P for much of the time. I spent
Saturday AM and early PM out enjoying my other hobby. Hopefully, next year the
sun will be more active (higher flux). At least the low K index helped with
northern stations (at least (4 AK in log, all loud) and there was a good
sporadic E opening 20-22Z from VE3 around to ENY/CT and north on 20. 75 was as
miserable as I expected it to be. Range was limited to 0 land with just a few
5's and the skip zone extended into OH, NC and 1 land very early both nights
(worse Sunday). The same was true of 40 Sunday AM with many stations skipping
over from PVRC land up to NY until 16Z. The majority of 40 Q's seemed to be 4's
and 1's Sunday AM around 15Z. This made working fellow PVRC'ers difficult more
often than not, sorry guys!
Surprisingly, the sweep was easier than the previous 2 years. I had to find very
few sections. VO1AW called Sunday AM, was called by ONN, SK, AB, many NE, many
MB, found VI and PR on 15 (almost gave up on 15 before I found PR), was called
by VE8NSD with low NR, and called in same 20M run by K6RIM in SF to make the
sweep.
I have done SS so long it is not a challenge to log and copy info at all. Ops
need to practice logging and check their audio/signal width with a trusted
helper before the SS. Poor audio seemed to be a record levels, many with some RF
feedback or no compression with narrow audio range. I stopped tell tell the ops
with really poor audio that they had a problem. It makes quite a positive
difference to have good range punchy audio, that's one of the secrets to scoring
so well in 8 hours. Ops need to learn how to keyboard Rx'ed info while talking;
there were many pregnant pauses even from SS veterans.
I really feel for the CA ops affected by the fires; hopefully no hams perished
and few lost their homes. Thanks for a good showing in this year's SS!
Thanks for all of the Q's/calls. I had very few deep pile ups, but did my best
to work them down quickly when 2-4 were calling. 20 was a pleasant surprise; I
had some very clear run frequencies on Sunday.
