Comments:
All wire antennas. 100% casual S&P style operating.
Above average cndx on 160m both nights, with Sat night having great sig
levels. However, the wx front moving thru Ohio brought rain and noticeable
higher noise levels Fri night, and even higher but tolerable QRN, tho it did
fray the nerves. But on Sat night, after one hour of working 160m I had had
enough, pulled the plug and went to bed, dreaming about all the DX still out
there! QRN got the best of me.
Sun morning the bands were nice and quiet but 160 had little to offer from the
Pacific. So I enjoyed FB cxndx on 40 and then 20m for the rest of the day.
Back on Sat, I spent the day watching football, and the rain.
Sunday around 4 pm made a handful of 15m qsos, heard nothing on 10m, so
dropped back to 20 and 40 for the rest of the contest. Great JA sigs on 20m,
and when they faded down I moved to 40 to finish out the contest. Even took a
short look on 160 and worked several Euros just starting to come thru.
Summary: Really good propagation ( other than the QRN issues) on 160-20m for
the bottom of the sunspot cycle. Was planning to hit 160 hard, and while I had
my best score ever on TB, I think it could have easily been doubled had the QRN
not chased me away. Also, my 100% S&P csual style ( and football) kept
my rate down. Besides a busy TB, 20m and 40m were loaded with strong sigs. So
not a bad showing for Mother Nature at or near the bottom of the current
sunspot cycle! A truly fun contest.
PS The QRN made me think harder about putting up a Beverage. Actually the
RBOG antenna would suit my property very well, although at $400 + RG-6
quadshield, it aint cheap. Anyone have experience with RBOGs?
