This year my readiness for the BC QSO was a big project as I lost the tree that
hold my main antenna. I also needed to do some work on my older radio TS180 S
with the power supply. I took about 8 days off from work and took a sabbatical
in the radio cave. I looked at the stuff I accumulated over the years at ham
fests and now I had to do something with it. I replaced all my coax connections
with double shielded coax to minimize the noise, made 2 new OCFD antennas, one
for 80m and the other for 40m, and a 4:1 balum for them so I could work 80, 40,
20, 15, 10 m bands. Then the fun was to put them up high enough in the proper
configuration having as much angular separation that I could with the space
limitation I have on my lot. It took me for ever to get a proper setup, trying
many scenarios. The antennas went up and down too many times that I can
remember. I posted a picture of it on my twitter @va7yjj. The end result is that
I had a working station ready and was anxious to test it.
After doing this contest for over 4 years I have learned this is actually a
challenging contest for a low power station, actually my old radio can only give
about 40 to 60 watts out max. I always hope to get more contacts with BC
stations and I am always amazed at the many contacts I get from the US. I worked
stations on both days most of the time. I tried to make good use of the VOACAP
online propagation tools and found it was not always useful. I was conflicted in
the afternoon as to where to focus my CQs on the BC stations on 7m or the USA
central states on 20m. Overall I am pleased with the results. I got 3 less
contacts than last years but got better multipliers so my total score went up by
250. This ends a 2 weeks focus on the radio. I need to go back to normal life
now …. until next years :))
