Comments:
Congratulations to the K3LR and NR4M teams for their excellent results in this
contest.
This was the 40th consecutive W3LPL multi-multi entry in the ARRL CW DX
Contest.
Our more southerly location again produced hundreds more European QSOs than more
northerly competitors. But I made two serious strategic errors that nearly
wiped out our propagation advantage. Two hours into the contest I learned that
one of our two daytime 20 meter operators could not join us for the contest due
to a very severe cold. I was forced to replan the 20 meter operating schedule
on the fly, but I failed to consider the possibility that 20 meters might be
wide open to Europe before 0900Z both days, an unusual occurrence during solar
minimum.
K3LR’s 20 meter team had already worked 100 Europeans when our 20 meter
operators made their first European QSO at 1045Z. Our 20 meter team didn’t
realize what had happened to them on Saturday morning so I repeated exactly the
same strategic mistake on Sunday morning. K3LR had 75 more European QSOs in
their log on Sunday morning when we worked our first European at 1045Z.
As Vic Clark W4KFC sometimes said: “if a contest lasts long enough all of the
competitors will have identical scores.” Sure enough, by the end of the
contest we had worked almost all of the unique stations that K3LR worked on
Saturday and Sunday mornings and we ultimately worked only three fewer 20 meter
European QSOs than K3LR.
