Comments:

First and foremost, I'd like to thank the Contestgroep Oude Maas and
particularly Kees PA3BWD and Alex PA1AW for their tremendous support. They did
all the hard work and I had all the fun.
There were still problems during the contest with the station due to really high
winds we've been having lately. It's a minor miracle that the operation came
together at all. So, having 15M antenna stuck and not rotatable (I thought it
was to Russia, but it turned out it was pointing in the opposite direction to
SA!) and missing a beverage (it didn't work at all for some reason, perhaps
because the wind took it down) was a small price to pay. Another major part of
this weekend's entertainment, unfortunately, was much more affected by the
winds. Last year we did a Mano a Mano competition with Franki ON5ZO/OQ5M, which
I lost by whopping 1.2%. This was my chance to redeem myself and earn some
bragging rights, but it was not to be. Because of how his crank-up tower is
setup, Franki wisely chose to sit this one out rather than risk his station be
destroyed by the merciless storms.

The contest itself was fun, but not as great as last year, in part because of
lack of motivation, in part because the high bands were not cooperating. Low
bands were quite good here and I managed to work more mults and Qs than last
year. As Mats RM2D observed, it was a bit disappointing to not see many stations
from Russian Far East. Chasing that elusive 0Z or another Pacific region mult
adds a special element of unique fun to this contest. I really missed it this
year. I have heard RA0FF on 20, but he wasn't strong and had a big pileup on
him. I also saw a couple other 0's spotted from less exotic 0Q an 0L, but none
are in the log, not on any band.

Another notable new development was seeing some Russian stations out of the
region of their call. That is, usually you can tell the QTH (oblast') by the
call, and if one travels within Russia, to operate elsewhere you had to use some
kind of portable designation. In a few instances this weekend it was not the
case. On one hand it adds a bit of an interesting challenge, similar to having
to actually receive the zone of the US stations in CQ WW. On the other hand, it
makes it more difficult to see if you need to work a particular station for a
mult or not, which I don't particularly like. In any case I wonder how
widespread this is going to be in the years to come.

Not sure if I'm going to do another one of these next year, as I might be back
on the West Coast, where, unfortunately, this contest is a non-event.

73, Denis - PA/K7GK, (PI4COM in RDXC '18/'19)
