Comments:
I really enjoy this contest and but for activity levels, it would be a great
contest. I like it because it's the one contest where you can take your time and
try microwave skeds without rushing, and the distance scoring makes it extra
interesting. It would be really something if somehow more guys would get on.
Next year!
Condx hr were about normal. The Hepburn forecast looked good for Sunday but alas
nothing materialized. Since the June contest I'd worked on my 1.2/2/3 and 5 ghz
stations and they were in much better shape this time. Special thanks to Terry
at Directive Systems and Steve at DEM for helping make this happen. I really
enjoy the microwaves and it was nice to operate with all the microwave bands
working - it's been awhile since I can say that. 432 likely still needs some
work as it is still not 100%
Rover activity was down a bit but still accounted for about over 20% of my
QSO's. It was great to work NN3Q, W2RMA and KF2MR on the microwaves in 2 or 3
grids. K2EZ, WB2SIH and KG6CIH also made the log. Great job!
One pet peeve about this contest - there seems to be an awful lot of guys
waiting on the chat page to work guys. Many times I tuned across the bands and
there was no one on yet as soon as I connected with them on the chat page they
were often easy to work. I called lots of CQs with modest success. I encourage
guys to do it the old fashion way and get on, spin the dial and call CQ!
It is interesting to watch the score change in the contest. In a regular grid
multiplier contest I usually go to sleep and if things are normal my score will
end up to be about 3 - 3.5 times what it is when I head off to sleep Saturday
night. Since there is no multiplicative effect in a distance contest, it was
quite different. I believe I had about 145k points when I pulled the plug around
10:45 PM Saturday after operating for about 8 hours (160 QSO's). 7 hours of
Sunday operating netted 91 QSO's and 71k more points. It's also interesting to
note that 3.4 GHZ was my highest scoring band though I only had 14 QSO's there.
The 10X factor vs 432 sure makes a difference, hi! Also interesting (see chart
below)to note that my average distance per QSO was highest on 902 with 2 and 3G
also higher than 222 and 432 MHZ. That's mainly because there are few locals to
work on those bands to bring the average down.
