Comments:
I had great hopes going into this contest of doing much better than last year. I
became discouraged Saturday morning when I found propagation on 20m so poor, and
15m was almost a right-off for me. It doesn't help that I'm still learning my
rig. I discovered early Sunday afternoon that enabling the wideband noise
blanker in my Flex 6600M dropped the noise floor a few dB, just enough to make a
few more signals readable. I had played with the wideband noise blanker in the
past on the low bands and didn't see any difference, so I didn't even think
about enabling it.
With the poor propagation on the high bands and high QRN on the low bands, I
just decided to make this another part time effort. I'm also still just using an
inverted V on 80m, although I did set up a triangular receiving array for 160m
that offered some relief on 80m. I really hope to get the 80m Yagi up on the
tower this summer. It pains me to see it lying on the ground.
In the end, I put in about 24 hours compared to 17 hours last year, for about
the same number of contacts, but my score was about 20% higher since I ventured
onto 80m for the extra multipliers. Overall, I have the impression that band
conditions were worse this year.
I'll catch you in the next one.
