Comments:

I first tried to grab a few mults on 15m but the band appeared to be dead, so I
spent the first several hours on 20m. I had some good runs but I could not
believe how hard I had to dig for most of the contacts. I really don't
understand how so many other people could hear me while I had such a hard time
hearing them even with my low local noise level. Atmospheric noise was
terrible, of course, but shouldn't they have had the same problem? I have
pretty good ears but I'd bet that at least 2/3 of my 20m contacts were right at
the noise level, yet when I asked for repeats they seemed to hear me fine. I'm
not talking QRM, either. These were just mostly inaudible signals. It really
was a LOT of work.

When my "mults = points" ratio hit 9 I decided I needed to switch to
40m to try to catch up, but the noise level was so bad I literally had trouble
working anyone. I tried running but just felt like a LID because I couldn't
hear anyone coming back, and S&P took forever. I was about ready to give up
when I decided to try my 600 foot BOG, and presto ... it dropped my noise level
by almost five S-units without too much signal penalty, at least eastward where
it points. At least I was able to run a bit, although again I had a lot of
stations in the mud who could still hear me pretty well. I really don't get
it.

I tried 80m but the noise level was S9 even with the BOG, so I gave that up
except to work a local just before I threw in the towel.

Tough sledding, but thankfully the storms didn't show up.

73,
Dave AB7E
