Enjoyable contest - the contest that I like the most. First weekend at Lake
Erie and second at Central PA mountain tops. Worked many usual suspects and
welcomed new 10ghz hams -- contest continues to grow. Rigs and op skills are
getting better. The W3SZ/K1RZ database makes it much easier to find/work more
stations - tnx Roger/Dave.
Longest Q this year was 678 km, a tad shorter than last year's 735. MANY Qs
were 400+. See K1RZ's commentary on ducts...At FN00rg could not work close in
regulars but could work 400km!
N9ZL joined us at FN00rg whose 4 ft dish and 20W made a statement. K1RZ and I
played 'ski lift bounce' with several Canadian friends. Metal in the sky, such
as antenna towers, ski lifts, and Ferris wheels make for unusual contacts - aim
at it and see what happens! We've made Qs using bounce for three contests
wherein the direct path didn't work.
Antenna aiming: used Suncalc.org's website to calibrate Compass Rose by
aligning the shadow of the feed on the center of the dish.
Know thy frequency: if you don't have good accuracy, make a commitment to fix
it for next year. Knowing where to aim and on what frequency makes the contest
jump. GPS is nice but not necessary; a good OCXO for the synth does the job.
If you can't change the LO chain, then get a digiLO board with a OCXO for a WSS.
