Comments:
Thanks to my beloved XYL, we were able to reconfigure the station so that I
could at least play radio. My muscle disease has affected my arm strength to the
point where I can no longer operate the radio the way the station was set up.
Normally, I would never have chosen a single operator LOW POWER category for 40
m in CQ WW (most would call that just plain crazy). But since the only working
antenna I have available is the 2 el 40 m beam lowered at about 35 feet which is
currently stuck on Europe, it was the only choice to make.
After listening to QRM for 15 hours over the weekend, I threw in the towel with
about 30 minutes to go since I couldn't find anybody else to work. The score
would've been good enough to be number one in W4 last year so we'll see how log
checking goes this year. I thought conditions were really good considering my
set up and not being able to rotate the antenna. I was able to work almost all
the Caribbean stations I heard, some SA, Northern Africa, Western Europe and the
Pacific off the back of the beam. Matter-of-fact, I worked 95 percent of all the
stations heard. The 19 zones and 67 countries worked is a new 40 m contest
record for the station. So needless to say, I am a happy camper.
Some of the great DX was VK9NC (Norfolk Island) multiple VKs, UB7K, II9P
(Sicily), 5K0K (San Andres Island), 6W1RY (Senegal), UW5ZM and VP9I (Bermuda).
Stations heard but not worked included Qatar, Kuwait, Antarctica and Pitcairn
Island. Now on to rebuilding the station.
Thanks to CQ and the CQWW committee for sponsoring this great contest. And
thanks to all the folks around the world whose contacts filled the log.
Best - Jere
FT1000MP Mk V(100w), XM240 for 40m and N1MM+.
