They say conditions repeat every 11 years. Thanks to the awesome tools on the
CQWW website, it's really easy (and fun) to look up past scores and logs. Those
tools, along with the public audio recordings available from K5ZD's website,
went a long way toward getting good and prepared to do a serious operation. It
just so happens that K5ZD has a full SOAB HP recording from his 2008 operation.
Randy makes SO2R sound easy. He is particularly adept at copying full call
signs on his run frequency while staying in stereo mode with his audio stream.
It's no easy feat, but when mastered it makes mult hunting significantly more
productive.
It appeared that the 2019 running would be a repeat of conditions from 2018 (and
2008). Specific band by band goals for this contest were based on log analysis
of top competitors from 2018 and the assumption that the solar weather would be
similar to last year's conditions. Based on those assumptions the following
goals were set:
160: 100 13 45
80: 400 21 75
40: 650 30 90
20: 1400 30 115
15: 650 22 95
10: 50 9 19
3250 125 439 = 5,004,090
The SFI held up but the conditions certainly weren't stable.
The first 12 hours were a slog. EU was not runnable on 40. Stations that are
typically 20 over were S7. 80 gave up a short run of EU at their sunrise and
160 was a shut out to EU. Those 12 hours though were actually quite enjoyable
though. It was fun to push really hard on S&P and to try and move as many
mults as possible.
20 was slow to open to EU both mornings, but after it did open it provided a
nice steady stream of callers from zones 14 and 15. Zone 16 was noticeably
depressed. 15 had been sounding really good before the storm and thankfully it
opened nicely to EU both days. 10 was exactly as expected. Limited openings to
South America and the deep south of the Caribbean.
While the first 12 hours were rough, the last 36 were smooth. 40 gave up some
incredible runs into EU with some massive signals. Even with the N2QV fire
power, it is still a grind to run EU on 40 SSB. A typical scenario is being
sandwiched between two big gun EU stations with a cacophony of alternating
screeching and rumbling interference. Hacking through that mess to find a
hidden caller takes patience and a willful sacrifice at the chance of marinating
acceptable hearing later in life.
80 meters also provided a nice EU run around 0200z on the second night. For
some reason though the run didn't continue through the European sunrise. EU was
still loud, but the callers just weren't there. 160 provided some good EU mults
and even gave up a sweet run of zone 14 stations at their sunrise.
The only thing missing from night two was a good EU run on 40 meters, but the
day time openings on 40 more than made up for the lack of night time production.
The high bands continued to be stable on the second day. I totally botched the
EU starting gun on 20 meters. By the time I got there, all the good spots were
taken and even the bad spots higher up in the band were occupied. It was a real
poop show during the 1100z and 1200z hours. Finding a clear spot was not
possible. And when I did find a spot, the interference was so bad that it made
copying others nearly impossible. I finally slunk away to 15 in defeat,
figuring it was too early for EU. Thankfully it wasn't and the 1300z and 1400z
hours provided the most enjoyable runs of the contest.
The 5 million mark was achieved with around 4 hours left in the contest. I
decided to set my sights on beating K5ZD's score of 6 million from 2008. Randy
had a good 20 meter run of JAs on 20 meters in 2008 so I thought maybe the same
could happen for me. It was not to be and the slow but productive 40 meter run
was sacrificed for only a handful of JA contacts.
Time starts to catch you when you can look up your own scores from previous
sunspot cycles. In 2008 I also operated SOAB HP. That operation was from
Arkansas with a bevy of huge antennas. Even with those antennas, I was only
able to manage 3.3 million points.
It's really amazing the impact of having a highly optimized station and location
can impact the final score. New York operating has its advantages and we've
been pleased (and a little surprised) with our ability to compete with coastal
operations on all bands. Thanks to technology, and my gracious and hard working
hosts, I was able to operate from my home in Arkansas this weekend.
