Comments:
First a big thanks to Ray W2RE and RHR for another fun DX contest!
I was pretty excited about another DX test from HH2AA. Last year this
station took #2 WORLD in CQWWCW SOLP(A) and with John P40W going HP
there was definitely a chance at #1....
When I went to bed late Thursday, the internet had been down to HH2AA
for 2 days. If it didn't work out I would just operate from KO7SS with
my 2 element yagi and OCF dipole at 55'. I got up at noon Friday and it
was all good to go!!!
This was my 4th contest at HH2AA and other than a few disconnects for a
few minutes it always worked well for me. The station does go down for
days at a time, but my fingers were crossed :)
You have to see the RBN spots for HH2AA CQing to believe it. A few CQ's
with 100W lights up skimmers on 5 or 6 continents.
The contest starts at 0000Z and the rates on 40M are great. Then at 0230
the first disconnect happens, after 380 Q's in 2.5 hours. Usually it is
back in a minute, but 5,10,30 minutes go by. Ugh!
I need to contest, so I open up a new log in N1MM and turn on KO7SS. 20M
has long closed to JA, so with an 40/80 OCF dipole at 55' in W7-land,
this is going to be a spot clicking event. But I will keep an eye on the
RHR screen and go back to HH2AA as soon as its back....
I do that all night, 500 Q's on 40/80, and finally 12 hours later at 1430
I get back on running as HH2AA! Saturday was great day, maybe I can still
pull this off....
At exactly 0230 on Saturday the internet to HH2AA goes down again! At the
exact time as on Friday, 12 hours after it came back. I was pretty groggy,
but there is a pattern here. I start again as KO7SS for a few hours, but
HH2AA is gone until the AM.
At exactly 1430 On Sunday, in the middle of the 2 hour W7-EU opening, it's
all good again. Pileups and rate from HH2AA! But at 2200, with 2 hours to
go, it's gone for good. I finish up CQWW running JA's on 20M from Arizona.
But it's all good! I can't ever remember so many rare DX stations in a
contest. Maybe there will be sunspots next year :)
The main highlight for me was a 1 hour rate over 200. On 15M with 100W
and a 2 element yagi.
