Comments:
Thanks again to my friends WU2X and N2QV for letting me operate from their
station. The risk of an internet failure is too big of a bet to take for the
biggest contest of the year, so I operated on site in New York. Additionally
it's nice to be at the shack to have my hands directly on the radios and to be
able to fix anything that might need fixing.
Pre contest goal was 4825 x 136 x 480 for about 8.5 million. Conditions were a
little worse than I anticipated so I'm really happy with the final score. The
countries just kept piling up mostly due to continual pounding of the second
radio.
I had hoped the contest conditions would improve throughout the weekend but they
seemed to deteriorate. Conditions started out stellar on 40 meters but that
band, at least here, was well below it's normal stats. 160 and 80 were great
and just seemed to get better as EU sunrise occurred. 40 had no EU sunrise
enhancement. This did mean that 80 stayed open longer which really pumped up
the QSO total.
15 meters was open enough to run for a few hours on Saturday but Sunday's
conditions were worse with no running at all to EU available. It was nice to
find a brief opening on 10 meters on Saturday which included nearly the entire
Caribbean; no ZF mult, :( though. A massive improvement on 10 over last year's
line score of 1-1-1.
I made a goal before the contest of not retreating to the high end of 20 meters.
Unfortunately, that meant defending my run frequency at all costs. It got ugly
on Sunday when 15 didn't open and everyone was looking for prime real estate on
the low end of 20. A certain EU station sent one question mark and then without
listening started to CQ. Twenty minutes later he finally moved up .5 kc.
Keeping that frequency also meant I couldn't spare any time digging out weak
callers. If they weren't 100% copyable then I just hit F1. I felt like a lid
doing this, but more than a couple of seconds of dead air meant the likely hood
of someone stealing the frequency.
The pileups on DX stations seemed bigger than usual. Some were really hairy and
more than a few were listening up. It also seemed that the trend to not
identify at least after a few contacts is returning. Regardless the turnout
from rare locations was excellent. Lot's of good stuff on from Africa and the
Indian ocean.
Thanks to all of the DX guys that are willing to QSY to another band. TI7W, was
generous enough to take time out of breaking 10K Qs to work me on 160, thanks
Chris! I somehow managed to miss P4 on 15 meters and V4 on 160, arrghh!!
Station setup: K3 & 590, 2KFA for each radio running 1.5 KW. YCCC SO2R
controller.
Software: N1MM+
Antennas: See N2QV QRZ page.
Thanks and 73,
