Comments:
Field operation from Witt Hill in Norway, Maine. IC-7610, battery power. 4 fixed
wire beams at 35 feet.
First night was amazing to EU, Africa, and SA. 98 countries. Saturday Very cold
temperatures and winds. Saturday started out well, but got super quiet around
0400z. Could hear stations from Asia around 1100z but they couldn't hear me.
Some weird long path openings to EU at the same time.
Should have bailed at that point. By 1900z the weather had turned to sleet,
rain, snow, and high winds. Water getting in the tent. Slush everywhere. Ice
accumulated on the open wire lines and detuned the antennas down to around 6.8
Mhz. Unfortunately I didn't have a manual antenna tuner (or a capacitor) and the
7610 tuner was not up to the job. I tried de-icing the feedline for the EU
antenna by hand, but the ice was stubborn and kept coming. Eventually got a
scissors and cut about 5 feet off the feed-line and the 7610 was happy again.
But it seemed like the antenna was just not getting out as well - probably due
drooping elements and overall sag from weight of ice.
Anyway, did not make goal of improving from last year's score but there's always
next year.
