ANT3: FD5 @20M
This year's participation was very uncertain. During the ARRL CW contest this
year two baluns of the Eantenna beam and the rotary dipole died. Reparing them
took a long time due to several reasons. When they finally were replaced the
antennas still showed bad SWR... This meant the coax cables were faulty and
needed replacement. The first available time slot was actually this weekend on
Saturday. Silvio HB9LCW was able to get help from a colleague. However.. the
weather forecast was not good. A strong wind called "Föhn" was
predicted for Saturday which meant climbing a 21meter tower was risky or had to
be cancelled.
Silvio and his team mate decided to give it a try. Kudos for both of them who
were up on the tower for more than one hour with strong gusty winds!
Around 1130Z on Saturday morning Silvio and Aurelio were ready to start. After a
few QSO's the four of us (HB0WR and HB9DVZ also helped out with the coax
replacements) went to the new "Gaflei Stuba" just 5min on foot away
from the shack to have lunch and warm up. I can recommend the
"Gerstensuppe" (soup with barley, veggies and bacon). Then after 13Z
we started the long run. Silvio did the first stint until 17Z. Aurelio took over
until the next moring around 0930Z.. It was almost like Single Op in CQ160M on
the Saturday stint :-) But it was fun! Highlight was for sure CX6VM who called
us on 160M...!
Silvio sat alone on Sunday daytime until 16Z. The last stint was done by
Aurelio. We switched to 40M quite early (1815Z) and the second QSO was 5N7Q who
was soo loud it took long because of disbelief. At1 1822Z NB1N called us...
WAW... soo early and his signal was nice. This remained until the end.
Propagation on 40M to NA was unbelievebly good. THey kept coming and coming.
During the first hours when NA was still in daylight it was really easy to work
them. They did not have any NA QRM... that changed when we needed to send
repeats after it got dark over there :-)
The question was if we would do better than last year (3304Q's and 2.8M points).
Looking at the time it would be close. But because 40M was running so good we
looged the 3305th QSO just over 23Z; ha! The last hour was spent to work multi's
and do final run on 80M.
So.. mission accomplished: the two broken antennas work again and the contest
was really a log of FUN. We hope you liked the multiplier
CU in the next contest: ARRL CW.
