This CQWW was # 60 for me…. The first one was 30 years ago in 1989 as CR2A -
it was paper and pen contesting back then. The next contest, in 1990 as CT3T,
was my first contest with computer logging.
I have been through all generations of contesting, from paper logging to
computer logging; from SO1R (Run or S&P) to SO2R and now into 2BSIQ (Two
bands Synchronized Interleaved QSOs).
2BSIQ is the heavy duty of contesting
It is very intense. I sit at the table and get out 48 hours later, nonstop. It
is so intense there is no room to get bored and fall asleep. There is no time to
eat, because your hands are moving from one keyboard to the other every three
seconds. I ate a banana and drunk a cup of water every six hour, because it
gives you enough energy and no need to go to w/c.
I have been evolving my 2BSIQ style:
The 2015/16/17 operations as CR3OO, I was running full synchronized with both
radios. A longer call - CR3OO and signing TU CR3OO at the end of each QSO to try
to get full synchronization.
In 2018, as D41CV, I tried something new. Instead of signing “TU D41CV” all
the time at the end of each QSO, I sent only “EE” at the end of each QSO.
This made a short cut to time sent and put me in de-synchronized time in half
QSOs. The move was not the best, score wise, because of error rates, since I was
trying to get a zone report on one radio and a call sign on the other radio, at
the same time in half of the QSOs.
In 2019, I went for something new again. Instead of D41CV I picked D4C. The call
is too short, to have full synchronization in the two radios but now I focused
on each call, in order not to bust stations. Hopefully it will pay-off in the
end.
I like to say D4C is the only station in the world that is stronger than the
operator. You sit and the station will do the job for you. The moto is very
revealing – “You call we answer”. Many thanks to D4C team, especially my
good friend Luca IK2NCJ and to Girts YL2KL and Marc EA8FF who were both at the
station with me providing all the help with little details to improve the
initial set-up.
At the very bottom of the solar cycle, going over 20M points is amazing. Don’t
know if CW will last for long, for new comers, with FT8 around, but CQWW CW
Contesting is still very alive.
Once again, I was on live score and it adds a new dimension to contesting. For
sure it pushes me to keep going and not let room to slow down against
competitors.
Congrats to KL9A and N6MJ. These two guys rock and give this 53-year-old guy a
reason not to retire just yet.
