Comments:
This was my 14th trip to the ZF1A station over the last 5 years. It has been
quite an adventure, and this contest was no different. I have a had a
tremendous amount of help over the years, and that continued with this effort.
While I was at the station by myself, I spent many hours on the phone with K6AM,
NN1C and W9KKN working thru some technical trouble I was having. Without their
help none of this would have been possible. Andrew, ZF1EJ, is always a top
notch host and some of the other locals took good care of me while I was on the
island.
The set up included 3 IC7610's. Icom and Ray N9JA have always been very
supportive of my efforts and the radios performed flawlessly. They are not
quite up to the supreme level of the IC7851, but the bang for the buck is
outstanding.
We also had a ton of work done by Andrey, RA6LBS of LBS systems. The new
beverage distribution system allowed me to use all 3 receive antennas on all 3
radios and this was a huge upgrade over what we had before. Also, with all the
antenna additions that we did over the WWSSB weekend, we needed to upgrade to 4
high stack matches and Andrey delivered these to us on short notice. As
expected, everything worked great.
The contest was quite a rush. The first day propagation was relatively good,
but the 2nd day was absolutely terrible. The first 31 hours I was averaging 268
q's per hour, and the last 17 hours I averaged 113 q's per hour. Chris TI7W put
in an absolutely stellar performance. I think it might be time to retire the
#ti7wsucks hashtag. There were so many amazing performances this year and I
love that so many guys were serious this year. I love the competition and I
really hope that they continue to join the fun in the future. I am already
making plans for next year and will be back better than ever.
People always wonder what it takes to make it to this level of contesting. To
give you an idea, I began training this year on July 1st. There were 3 things
that I concentrated on: Losing weight, training on RUFZ, and doing 2BSIQ
training in DXLog. Final results were: Lost 31 lbs, got up to 50k pts and
87wpm in RUFZ, and 84 q's in 10 minutes during 2BSIQ training. The biggest
benefit to the contest this year? Losing weight and increasing stamina. I had
some issues the last 2 years staying awake all 48 hours. This year, I was able
to do it fairly easily. Sunday was still hard as I kept falling asleep for very
short periods at the key, and the hallucinations the last few hours were pretty
intense. I plan on continuing on the path to better health and I know that will
continue to be a huge benefit not just for contesting, but life in general.
CBS numbers below for those that are interested.
