Comments:

This year the contest was practically over after Friday night. 302 of 371 QSOs
before 9:30pm on Friday.
I quit on Sunday at about 230 pm after 7.5 hrs with less than 25
Q’s….reading a book calling CQ 100 hundreds times without even a trace of
response, made BIC tolerable. Nothing heard east of CO all day Sat and Sun.
Congrats to Mike, W6YX (N7MH) and David, WD6T for really sticking with it till
the bitter end with mostly very thin workable activity.
Never heard W1, W2 or VE3. The spotted DX I was never able to hear: FY, P4, HK,
PJ, KP2, YV, VK, ZL, HP and any VE east of VE5.
Here is my state by state breakdown.
W1 = 0
W2 = 0
W3 = no DE or DC… MD= 1 PA = 7
W4 = no SC…. AL=1 FL=1 GA=1 NC=1 KY=5 TN=4 VA=4
W5 = no MS….AR=3 LA=1 NM=6 OK=3 TX=9
W6 = all KH6=1 CA=87 (mostly SF Bay area)
W7 = no KL….AZ=34 ID=8 MT=8 NV=4 OR=6 UT=10 WA=19 WY=5
W8 = no WV…. MI=1 OH=19
W9 = all…. IL=23 IN=11 WI=8
W0 = no ND…CO=25 IA-4 KS=1 MN=7 MO=7 NE=1 SD=2
VE = only VE5(1), VE6(2) and VE7(2)
XE = 2 states SON, BCS
DX = PY(7), LU(7), CE(3), CX(3)

Packet was practically useless sense activity was so slow anything workable
showed up on the panadapter and about 302 QSOs were answers to my CQing on Fri
evening. On Sat and Sun packet never proved useful except to see the east coast
activity which never made it to CA. All mults were answers to CQs except LU,CE
and CX.

The 10m contest is really an individual event with conditions varying widely
even locally. Of course skill is always a factor but even during great years 10m
is VERY local. Another factor during these lean times affecting the west coast
is there are NO real population centers within skip to the east or west until
Denver. LAX, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix and Salt Lake are generally out of skip.
When the band closes to anywhere except zone 3…short skip brings almost no
volume. Remember it is ~ 400 miles from SF to LAX, 800 miles to Seattle, 744 to
Phoenix and 1219 to Denver. If you take those numbers to the east coast you
encompass lots of population centers. The condx Friday were very unusual. Not
only did the opening extend much further east than normal for that time of day
it somehow produced contacts in W0, which except for CO, is usually non-existent
during these lean times. Suddenly, WI, MN were available in small numbers.
Usually, they are out of skip. One forgets that a great deal of the eastern skip
from CA is desert with practically no hams. Also skip to TX is usually very
sparse and that is where most W5’s live.
Thanks to Ken, N6RO for the use of his station, Sat night hamburger and
providing TV sports viewing during slow times(=95% of the contest!)
