K5TR:
I did the pre-stew back in October with my neighbor W5TN and we had a
good time. W5TN came back and did the ARRL 160 contest from here as a
single op and did really well for his first outting in that contest
from my station.

For the real Stew W5TN came out again and this time we also invited
Matt K5TMT - Matt has only be licensed for about 3 or 4 years. But he
has learned the code and had no issues working 160 meters during the
contest. The first few times he took over operating he would set the
speed to 20 wpm but later in the contest he was calling CQ and 25 wpm
and doing a fine job. W5TN and K5TMT did the bulk of the operating
and but I got in some time here and there. It was great fun and I
hope one of both of them can make it out for many more contests.

Conditions were really good - I am not sure either of these guys knows
how good it was - we were getting answers to our CQs by EU stations
and even the far north ones were easy copy here - some of the best
conditions to EU I have ever heard on 160 from here in Texas. I know
that N5RZ who is about 60 miles west of me and who has many more
years/hours of experience on the band said it was the best he has
heard. It was great fun.

W5TN:
I brought out my cooler full of Topo Chico water along with some snacks for the
night. Matt brought out some snacks too and K5TR provided some late night
Lasagna. We settled down to operating before sunset and spent a bit of time
planning our time off in the middle of the night so that we could plan the
proper 14 hours. We initially decided to take a break around 3:15am local time
after sunrise in the British Isles. We were still working some stations in
Ireland so this pushed out to a bit. During our 45 minute break the amp went
into standby and we all crashed for a bit. It was hard to wake back up but I
did and let Matt sleep a bit longer. I figured K5TMT could bring us home in the
6-7am timeframe which he did. I operated for an hour and a half or so then K5TR
took over, then K5TMT. When K5TR took over I fell asleep on the floor with the
2nd set of headphones on my head.

This was my 3rd 160 contest this year and by far the most fun. While the ARRL
160 was very busy, the DX component of the Stew was fabulous. I still find
copying some grid squares a challenge when the signal is in the noise but it’s
always worth it to dig it out when possible. I’ve never experienced
European DX coming in like locals on 160 before. The KX3 was set up with
diversity receive the whole time, with the beverage and receive array doing the
RX work for the night. We spent most of the time using the NE TX antenna, with
a smaller percentage on the NW and combined NE/NW TX setting. Not too many
South American stations were worked but it was nice to have a loud station from
Peru answer a CQ. One thing that I did find very surprising is that we had some
pretty good storms 800km (+/-) or so away from us and we really did not have
much lightning noise. We found this quite odd. I think we worked just about
everything we could from our location.

This was really a lot of fun, Matt did a fabulous job and looked like a contest
pro in the early morning hours, and of course, K5TR is amazing as always. I
look forward to working with this team again soon.
