This operation nearly didn't happen. We've had a building noise on 160 and it
really peaked during the CQWW CW contest. So much so that running on 160 was
nearly impossible. Fortunately, N2QV and WU2X pulled some late night sleuthing
magic and were able to find the offending noise source (why are they always
towards EU or JA?). Kudos to the utility company for quickly fixing the
problem. They saved the day for us!
Next up, we decided to move from our trusty K3 and 590 setup to the FLEX 6700.
I was really excited to use it. The display looks like something from the
future and the receiver was the best I've ever heard. Unfortunately, it started
to randomly lose network connection and we had to go back to the trusty K3 &
590 setup that has worked so well for us. Additionally, the inherent latency
issues with the Flex is significant enough to give serious pause to using the
radio in a remote setup.
It seemed like the weekend was shaping up for an epic repeat of the 2009
contest. The first few hours on Friday after sunset were truly amazing. Zone
16 stations were S9 or more on the meter and many 10 pointers made it into the
log. Everything was really humming at this point and I had visions of working
EU non stop for the next 8 hours. During this time I would occasionally listen
in on the Maine gang, W2GD, and K3ZM. They seemed to have many unanswered CQs
while my log was piling up with 10 pointers. Life was good.
Well that scenario flipped awfully fast. Starting around 0400z, EU was
practically inaudible and now the Maine party, GD, and ZM were working EU that I
couldn't even hear. There was nothing to do but just plow ahead and work the
second radio every second of the contest. EU sunrise on Friday was a big dud.
After day one, I was well behind those that were posting their scores. Notably,
the W2GD team was just killing it! Day 2 seemed to start of as a repeat of Day
1. Very nice opening about an hour after sunset and then a fade of EU, but then
to my surprise, EU slowly made a return appearance and hung in there through the
EU sunrise opening. The conditions seemed to be slightly more stable Saturday
night and a few more drop ins seemed to reveal that conditions were favoring NY
as compared to the Maine brigade, GD, and ZM. The highlight of this run was
being called by a loud 7Z1SJ.
It gets boring to continually tune through a band and find dupe after dupe. But
I kept telling myself that there were probably 10 new mults out there just
waiting to be found. Finding guys like HC0, D4, CT8, EA9, TF, etc. provided a
nice little bump of adrenaline and helped to keep pushing the second radio for
the entire contest. After EU died around 3:00 am local time, there was nothing
left but to hope that ND would call or be found. I totally lucked out when one
called and I attribute that luck to the cow bell that N5ECT/WD5R left at the
K5GO station many years ago. It's guaranteed that anyone in possession of that
cow bell will be called by a ND station (Now Doug and Marlene know the secret to
working ND). I just happened to recently bring said bell to my house and kept
it in full view throughout the contest; waiting for it to work its magic. Sure
enough, early Sunday morning a single ND station made its way into the log. I
yelled quite loudly, forgetting that I was sitting in my home office and not in
the radio shack where such behavior was acceptable.
I've been really fortunate to be a part of the evolution of the N2QV contesting
station. The last three years in this contest have been particularly rewarding
and frankly very surprising. I never dreamed that competing with coastal
stations was possible on 160 meters from NY. I still think it's impossible to
compete with them, but N2QV's stubborn optimism persists and darn it if he isn't
right most of the time. The last three years have proven that with some
incredible station engineering, a ton of copper, and some decent receive
antennas that it is possible to compete and win with anyone from anywhere.
Congrats to my dad, for an incredible job from ZF. Just an outstanding
performance!
Alert, digression away from the 160 contest ahead:
I recently turned 40, and to celebrate that milestone I ran in my first ultra
marathon, which just happened to be 40 miles. I think the contesting community
could learn a lot from racing:
1. All competitors started from the same line and follow the same rules.
2. All competitors can look each other in the eye and know who they were
competing against.
3. Instant results were available at the end of the event.
4. Unique prizes for all participants, with special awards to the top
finishers.
Massive changes need to be made to the contesting paradigm if we want to grow
and encourage competition.
