Comments:
Us midwest guys had a blast using the N2QV super station this weekend. We
really appreciate the hard work that has gone into building the station and
maintaining it. This was our first stab at a multi op remote in an all band
contest and we're very pleased with the results. Overall we were fairly laid
back... no set operating schedule and no real plan other than to be on the air
and put points into the log. Kenny, N5EE, and Karl, K9BGL, did the bulk of the
operating. It was great to have John, K5RM, Chuck, KM5G, and Les, K5LG, stop by
to do some operating on Saturday.
Conditions were outstanding on the low bands both nights. We had good EU
sunrise peaks on all three low bands which makes for a really fun night. We
played follow the EU horde, slowly draining 160, then 80, then staying on 40
until 20 opened.
We were blown away by the signal strength of the EU stations, especially on 160
and 80 meters. This is not hyperbole, but the signal strength of EU on 160 from
the east coast is as good or better as the signal strength of EU on 20 meters
from the midwest. It was easier to work QRP EU on 160 than KW++ EU on 15.
We had a big goose egg on 10 meters until Sunday when it briefly opened. The
opening was a bit strange. I was shocked that we worked ZF5T, since it's
usually tough to work ZF under tough conditions on 10 meters. Additionally, the
normally loud South Americans and southern Caribbean stations were weak. It
also seemed that the Caribbean was coming in from odd beam headings at times.
We were thankful to pick up the 23 mults in roughly and hour of operating time.
