Comments:
I was not sure going into this contest if I would do a single band 40
or all band effort. In the end I opted to have a chance at some rate
and went all band. I am very happy that I did that - as the rates
were much better than I would have ever guessed. With the world
staying home and no sports on TV or much of anything else to go to it
seems many in our hobby are getting on the radio. I had been noticing
an up tick in activity in the week or so leading up to the contest but
I was not fully prepared for just how much of a difference it made.
One of the choices you have to make in this contest is do you go for
the high rates of running stateside or spending your time on bands adn
times to maximize the DX contacts for their higher point value. And
on the low bands it is a huge advantage. If you have a 30 hour of
nothing but 6 point contacts that gets you 180 QSO points. It takes a
180 hour of 1 point in country contacts to make the same number of
points. Doing those slow 30 hours on the low bands is more work and
makes you feel like you are not doing well - when you really are
making the best use of your time. Going into this year (and I have
done this before) I decided that I would mostly go for the big rate
and have fun running. But I did spend some of the contest working on
getting the high point contacts but I could have done much more. But
at this point in the cycle from here in Texas it is just really hard
to get a frequency on 20m and work DX. If we have 15m it makes all
the difference in the world - but that was not this weekend. So rate
it was.
Ever since the WPX was changed to allow in country QSOs to count for
one point the rates in this contest have been very good for me an
others at the start. Some years or better than others as you would
expect. A few years ago I had a 225 first hour and that was really
fun and cool. This year the first four hours were:
(includes dupes)
324
284
275
201
CBS says my best 60 minutes was a 340.
It was crazy. All weekend there was what seemed to a bottomless pit
of USA stations to work on the bands. There were a number of hours that
I took off due to needing to take off-time on Sunday that I am sure
would have been over 100 for all of them - it was a good weekend to
work the USA from here in Texas. It made working DX harder - for the
periods the band was also open well enough to get DX to answer me.
The high rate was fun.
One side effect of having a large number early on in the contest is
that getting some folks to copy it correctly is hard. They are jsut
not thinking you can have the number you have and so that can slow
things down. When I got about 4000 it seemed to get harder to get the
number across to some stations - esp DX ones that were not hearing me
that well or where we have language issues.
Another fun contest and great to hear everyone on the radio.
Looking forward to the next time.
